Take alms (Zakat) from their wealth to purify and cleanse them (Qur’an, Surah At-Tawbah 9:103)
Refusing to Pay Zakat is a Serious Sin: Whoever is made wealthy by Allah and does not pay the Zakat of his wealth, then on the Day of Resurrection, his wealth will be made like a bald-headed poisonous snake and it will encircle him and bite him. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1403)
Zakat is a Right of the Poor: Allah has made it obligatory for them (Muslims) to pay Zakat from their wealth to be given to the poor among them.
Hadith
The Prophet ﷺ said
Zakat Protects from Hellfire:Charity extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire.(Sunan Ibn Majah 3973)
Warning Against Withholding Zakat:The one who does not pay Zakat will have his wealth turned into a snake on the Day of Judgment, which will bite him.(Sahih al-Bukhari 4565)
Zakat is a Pillar of Islam:Islam is built on five pillars: testimony of faith, prayer, giving Zakat, fasting in Ramadan, and performing Hajj.(Sahih al-Bukhari 8, Sahih Muslim 16)
Hadith
The Prophet ﷺ said
Zakat Leads to Prosperity: Take charity from their wealth to purify them and cleanse them and pray for them. Indeed, your prayer is a reassurance for them.(Surah At-Tawbah (9:103) and Sunan Abi Dawood 1580)
No Zakat on Basic Necessities: There is no Zakat on less than five camels, less than five ounces of silver, or less than five wasqs of dates.
Zakat as an Act of Mercy: Whoever is merciful to the poor and needy, Allah will be merciful to him on the Day of Judgment.
